Memorial Day originated after the Civil War as a time to honor fallen Union soldiers, first widely observed in 1868 as "Decoration Day" when graves were adorned with flowers. Over time, the holiday expanded to commemorate all American military personnel who died in service. In 1971, Memorial Day became a federal holiday, officially observed on the last Monday in May.
Oddly enough, the holiday also kicks off "white clothing season." This custom originated in the late 19th to early 20th century among upper-class Americans who marked the transition to summer fashion with lighter, more breathable clothing. Wearing white after Memorial Day—and stopping around Labor Day—became a subtle social rule signaling class and seasonal awareness. Though no longer strictly followed, it remains a cultural reference in fashion.
This time of the year is also the hand-off between ramping down the "business" of school and ramping up celebrations and recognitions. Check out some of the dates below, with precise start and end times forthcoming.
Enjoy the weather.
