Hawksweek (25-26) #1

I feel like we say this every single year.

"The summer went by so fast!"

"I can't believe it's the first day of a new school year!"

Although many of us are veterans at this by now, we have a small cohort of incoming K students who are starting at the big school for the very first time. We wish our youngest students (and their families) the best for the upcoming school year.

This will be a longer version of Hawksweek than is typical, but we want to make sure that we share additional details and reminders, as well as get important info out to new families and students.

Starting this week, students in grades 9-12 will immediately begin the final planning phases for their annual Fall Field Study to Mt. Katahdin. Although we expect all students to attend, we also understand there are extenuating circumstances. Please notify the school by Friday if your plans change. Students who do not attend Fall Field Study are expected to be in school and will plan their own alternative project starting day one.

Don't miss any updates. If you or someone you know wants to make the Hawksweek list, just fill out this form.

Highlights

At the start each week, we hold a whole school morning meeting, dedicated to building relationships, sharing good news, celebrating accomplishments, and announcements. Families and community members are always invited to attend a Monday morning meeting. However, a special invitation goes out to everyone for our first whole school meeting this year, beginning at 8:00am on Tuesday.

traffic

A quick note about transportation. To ensure an easy transition to "the BIG school," the first three rows on the bus will be reserved for all Kindergarten students, whose names will be affixed to the seat backs. Please make sure your students are aware. Additionally, note the traffic patterns in the image to the left for a safe pick-up and drop-off.

For the second year, we will be assigning Yondr pouches to all students in grades 9-12, and by request for students in other grades. All personal devices must be stowed in a pouch during school hours at all times, and will be "unlocked" at the end of the day. We highly recommend the off position to minimize unnecessary notifications from smartwatches.

Students will also be discouraged from wearing bluetooth headphones or earbuds during classes, out of respect for teachers and their peers. If a phone is visible, or outside of a pouch, it will be sent to the main office and a parent/guardian will need to pick it up. It will not be released to the student.

sneakers

One thing we noticed last year was the number of students without the appropriate footwear for PE classes and indoor recess. As the school year progresses, please make sure that your student has sneakers at the ready either on their feet or have a pair they can keep at school. Otherwise, they may need to sit out. Boots and bare feet are not practical or safe on our gym floor.

Please refrain from using social media or text messages to staff personal devices to notify the school about absences, tardies, or transportation changes.

As the school year begins, consider taking the Wait Until 8th pledge and model developmentally appropriate use of smartphones.
