Hawksweek (25-26) #25

Now that it's March, we should definitely notice a welcome change in the amount of daylight we're experiencing. This always has a profound effect on my overall mood! And even though it's soggy and a little bit gross, we are seeing some green stuff on the ground.

As you'll see below, we have a number of great highlights over the last week or so, with more to come. The spring show Mean Girls is fully cast, with rehearsals beginning Monday. We are also compiling a significant list of dates for upcoming events, which we will share once we've ironed out all of the details. Ultimately, once March does hit, things have a way of wrapping up rather quickly. Careful not to blink, or you'll miss it.

Tudor Games: Nine Men’s Morris

Our Grade 7–8 students have been exploring the sports and games of Tudor England, bringing history to life through hands-on learning. Students learned to play Nine Men’s Morris, a strategy game played for over a thousand years and historically found carved into stone and church benches across Europe.

Thanks to our Grade 5 design company, PrintMax, students now have their own engraved game boards to use and share. The learning even extended into the community when students brought the game to the North Haven Market, where they taught others, including one student’s great-grandparents, how to play. It was a wonderful example of history, design, and community connection coming together.

Highlights

Cyrus presented his project at the Fisherman’s Forum this Friday along with about 15 other participants from the Eastern Maine Skippers Program. Cyrus’ project focuses on collecting data about offshore bottom temperature change in the Gulf of Maine and how it impacts lobstering.

Off-Island Field Trip: Library Research & Snow Bowl Ski Day

Over 20 students in grades 5–12 recently had the opportunity to visit the mainland for a day of learning and outdoor adventure. The trip began with a visit to the Rockport Library, where students explored resources and conducted research before heading to the Camden Snow Bowl for ski and snowboard lessons and time on the mountain.

Thank you to the NHCS Wellness Committee and staff for supporting this off-island field trip. Opportunities like this require coordination and planning, and we are grateful to provide experiences that combine learning, challenge, and community for our students.

Last week, NHCS received 150 or so salmon eggs that we will be helping to hatch out in the classroom this spring as part of the Maine Council of the Atlantic Salmon Federation’s Fish Friends Program.

The last remaining wild Atlantic salmon populations in the United States are found only in Maine and are listed as an endangered species. This program aims to teach kids about the important work of wild Atlantic Salmon and fisheries conservation as well as provide a learning opportunity in the classroom as we raise salmon that will then be returned to their natal waters along the Penobscot River later this spring.

Follow along as we track the egg development and hatching of these amazing creatures!

We placed second again!! Another silver trophy!

Astrid got All Festival Cast and we got special commendations for prop design and “commitment” which was a recognition of the cast doing the scenic, costume, and prop design too!
