By the end of this week, it will be February already and, of all days, Groundhog Day! The one thing we can seem to depend on is foul weather disrupting the schedule. With that, please note the Vinalhaven games have been moved from Monday to Friday as a result of, you guessed it, snow, rain, and wind. Also this week teachers will be working on Quarter 2 grades. Barring any technological issues, we should have those reports going out on Friday.
On Friday of last week, we held what we hope to be the first of many town halls with students and staff operating as equal partners in governing our school. It was an excellent opportunity to both elementary and high school students to hear from each other and discuss ideas. For instance, students discussed the need for a different cubby storage system in the elementary wing that could more effectively contain their winter gear. There was overwhelming support for a pee-wee basketball league this spring. An exploratory committee will also be formed by students to determine if recess times should be changed.
We hope to build momentum and hold these meetings every two weeks during the school day. Once everyone gets accustomed to the format, students will eventually be able to chair these meetings themselves. You can view a picture of our first meeting below.
